More than half of these poems make me happy. More than half make me blink a tear away, briefly gaze away toward some invisible horizon, and catch my breath until the world resettles around me.Product details

I human and wonderful experience.
Eloquent and moving- I love the poems!
I so enjoyed the entire collection! A diverse group of visionary and nuanced poems which encourage us all to behold again and again with renewed verve and rigor. Great poems to start the day with!
I LOVE the turtle poem! It brought me right back to childhood days. For your own magical journey, get yourself a copy.
This is the second book of Lisken's that I own. I have attended several of her readings over the years and she just continues to bring out the best in all of us as she probes our the innermost feelings of our humanity. She is, however, such a good teacher that she exposes us to sides of ourselves that we couldn't articulate or just didn't know existed. There are several of her poems that literally take my breath away; her word choices delight those of us nerdy enough to inquire into meanings and nuances. Nothing is here by chance and the realization of the subtleties of her writing connect you to her and her very substantial and growing number of readers.
This book took seven years to write. It is worth every minute you spend with it. It is by no means a quick read. Treat yourself. Luxuriate in the words and the feelings. I am sure you will feel more connected when you do.
Don't miss "West Stockbridge, 1941" and "Tommy". I know that she has a number of her works available to listen to on her website and I'm not certain if either of these are there -- but both are in What We're Made Of and will give you considerable pause -- and considerable enjoyment.
I love to listen to poetry; I find it difficult to read. I find myself seeking a striking metaphor that will explode into a precious image and bring the meaning into focus and make me stop and think. This inaugural volume, “What We’re Made Of”, by Lisken Van Pelt Dus is replete with such images.
Images of gardens, meditations on the impossibility of holding on to the present, roses opening on a summer’s day, the expanding universe, “ a mountain melting into spring.”
It is no accident that “What We’re Made Of” was in the running for three major prizes. This is a journey of the mind and of the heart, well worth taking.
